Peter Turchi is a Visiting Professor in the Department of English at the University of Houston, part of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. He holds a BA from Washington College and an MFA from the University of Arizona. His academic career includes teaching at Northwestern University, Appalachian State University, and the Bread Loaf Writer's Conference, as well as directing the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College from 1993 to 2008.
His research focuses on creative writing, narrative techniques, and the intersection of cartography with literary imagination. Notable works include Maps of the Imagination, A Muse and a Maze, and The Pirate Prince. He has co-edited influential craft anthologies like A Kite in the Wind and Bringing the Devil to His Knees.
Turchi’s awards include Guggenheim and NEA fellowships, the Sophie Kerr Prize, and the Sir Walter Raleigh Award. His articles and essays explore narrative structure, creative process, and spatial storytelling in fiction.
