Dr. Peter Thurgood is a Lecturer in the School of Engineering at RMIT University, Australia. His research focuses on biomedical engineering, nanotechnology, and mechanobiology, particularly investigating the role of Piezo1 ion channels in endothelial cell mechanotransduction and developing microfluidic systems for disease modeling. He is actively involved in supervising postgraduate research projects, including studies on vascular mechanics and biomedical sensor technologies. His work spans interdisciplinary areas like lab-on-a-chip devices, tissue engineering, and photonic materials.
Research interests include the interplay between mechanical forces (e.g., shear stress, substrate stiffness) and cellular responses, as well as the design of advanced microfluidic tools for biomedical applications. He has pioneered projects such as dynamic vortex generation in microfluidic systems and bioengineered vascular models for foam cell formation studies. Collaborative efforts involve developing wearable health sensors and optimizing LED exposure systems for skin cell research.
Dr. Thurgood’s innovations in microfluidics include 3D-printed flow sensors and self-sufficient microfluidic pumps, emphasizing practical applications in diagnostics and therapeutics. His recent work explores high-accuracy nanoprobe technologies for cancer cell discrimination and the integration of plasmonic materials in biomedical sensors.
