Rober’s research centers on family communication, particularly silences and secrets, and family therapy with children. He emphasizes the therapist’s inner conversation, not-knowing in dialogical therapy, and reflexive practices to address therapeutic impasses. His work includes qualitative studies on topics like parentification, donor-conceived families, and emotion regulation in bereavement.
His publications span peer-reviewed journals like Family Process, Journal of Family Therapy, and Death Studies, covering dialogical approaches, micro-analyses of therapeutic sessions, and narrative processes in trauma and loss. He has authored books such as Together in Therapy and The Naked Therapist, contributing to systemic and discursive qualitative methods in clinical practice.
