Peter Pelzer is a Full Professor of Spatial Planning and Strategy at TU Delft’s Department of Urbanism. Previously, he served as an Associate Professor at Utrecht University’s Faculty of Geosciences and held roles as Programme Director of Continuing Education and Director of Education for Professionals. His research focuses on long-term thinking, spatial planning, and imagination in urban development. Pelzer is renowned for his innovative educational approaches, including winning the 2021 Higher Education Premium and 2024 National Teacher of the Year award. He is affiliated with the Urban Futures Studio and has contributed to projects like the Post-Fossil City Contest and the Råängen experiment.
Research interests include sustainable urbanism, climate policy engagement, and governance of mobility platforms. Pelzer’s work bridges academia and practice, emphasizing the 'imagination paradox' in planning and advocating for decade-based spatial thinking. His publications span journals like Climatic Change, Urban Planning, and Environment and Planning B.
He has served on committees such as the Council for the Environment and Infrastructure, advising on climate adaptation. Pelzer’s educational innovations include the ‘Mixed Classroom’ project, blending student and policymaker learning.
