Peter O’Connell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Classics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research focuses on ancient rhetoric, Greek literature, and Classical Athens. He holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University (2011), an M.Phil. from the University of Cambridge (Frank Knox Memorial Fellow), and was an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in the Humanities at Stanford University. Previously, he taught at the University of Georgia for ten years, where he held a joint appointment in Classics and Communication Studies.

Research interests include ancient rhetoric and poetics, Greek literature, and Classical Athenian institutions. His notable work includes The Rhetoric of Seeing in Attic Forensic Oratory (2017) and articles on Attic orators, Sappho, and Gregory of Nazianzus. His current project explores rhetoric, accounting, and aesthetics in Classical Athens.
He has been recognized with the Sandy Beaver Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (2023). His teaching spans Greek and Latin language courses and seminars on ancient rhetoric and culture. He has held fellowships at the Center for Hellenic Studies and the Willson Center for the Humanities.
