Peter N. Lewis

Peter N. Lewis is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto. He has held significant administrative roles including Associate Vice-President, Research and Innovation (2010-2016) and Vice-Dean, Research and International Relations in the Faculty of Medicine (seven years prior to 2010). He served as Chair of the Department of Biochemistry from 1991 to 2001.

His research spans neurodegeneration, chromosome structure/function, gene regulation, and protein folding. A key focus is mitophagy and neuroprotective mechanisms in diseases like Parkinson’s, alongside studies on histone acetylation and NAD-dependent deacetylases.

Recent work includes drug discovery for mitophagy modulation (2020) and mechanistic studies on SIR2 family enzymes (2005-2006). Collaborative efforts in 2007 explored histone acetyltransferases in DNA replication. He co-founded Rosetta Therapeutics (2018) for translational applications in molecular medicine.
