Peter M. Kyne is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the Research Institute for Environment and Livelihoods, Charles Darwin University, within the Faculty of Science and Technology. His work focuses on conservation biology, particularly marine and freshwater systems, with an emphasis on chondrichthyan fishes (sharks, rays, and ghost sharks). He holds a PhD from the University of Queensland (2006) and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Melbourne.
Research Interests:
- Threatened species management, specifically sawfishes, river sharks, and rhino rays
- Fisheries bycatch mitigation and IUCN Red List assessments
- Global extinction risk assessments and policy development
- Shorebird and terrestrial bird conservation
Recent Projects:
- Addressing critical knowledge gaps for sawfish conservation in northern Australian fisheries
- Marine protected areas for sharks in Latin America
- Citizen science monitoring of shark habitats in the Indo-Pacific
- Water security programs for northern Australia
Advising & Grants: Supervises 7 HDR students across Charles Darwin and Southern Mississippi Universities. Leads projects funded by Australian Government's NERP/NESP programs and international collaborations. Active in IUCN Shark Specialist Group initiatives.
Labs/Teams: Core member of the Charles Darwin University's aquatic conservation research team, collaborating with global networks on shark/ray conservation.
