Peter Lievens is a full Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at KU Leuven's Faculty of Sciences, where he leads the Quantum Solid State Physics research unit. His academic career spans decades of research in cluster physics and nanomaterials science. Beyond his research role, he serves in multiple university governance positions including vice-chair of the KU Leuven Alumni Policy Council and chair of the Education Quality Assurance Committee. Notably, he is currently a candidate for rector of KU Leuven in 2025 with a comprehensive reform program.
Lievens' research focuses on fundamental aspects of cluster science with practical applications in energy technologies. His core interests include:
- Bimetallic clusters in the gas phase studied through advanced laser spectroscopy and mass spectrometry
- Clusters on surfaces and cluster-assembled films
- Sputtering of atoms, molecules, and clusters using resonant and non-resonant laser ionization
- Laser spectroscopy of short-lived atomic nuclei
- Magnetism of small metal clusters
- Electrocatalysis and photocatalysis using nanocluster-modified electrodes
Analysis of his recent publications (2023-2025) reveals a strong emphasis on applying cluster science to energy conversion challenges. The research shows a clear evolution from fundamental cluster properties toward engineered cluster systems for specific technological applications, particularly in CO2 electroreduction to valuable products and photoelectrochemical water splitting. His work combines experimental cluster production and characterization with practical catalytic testing, demonstrating how atomic-level control of cluster composition and structure can optimize performance for energy applications.
As an academic leader, Lievens holds several significant governance roles:
- Vice-chair of the KU Leuven Alumni Policy Council
- Member of the Faculty Council of Sciences (as ZAP)
- Member of the Departmental Council of Physics and Astronomy (as ZAP)
- Chair of the Education Quality Assurance Committee (as vice-rector)
- Member of the Raad voor Internationaal Beleid (as vice-rector)
- Member of Coördinatie KU Leuven LERU (as vice-rector)
