Peter Levine is the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Lincoln Filene Professor of Citizenship & Public Affairs at Tufts University's Jonathan Tisch College of Civic Life. He holds primary appointments as Professor in the Political Science Department and secondary appointments in Philosophy, International Relations, Science and Technology Studies, and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI).
His educational background includes a BA in Philosophy from Yale University (1989) and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Oxford (1992), where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. Before joining Tufts in 2008, he worked for Common Cause, the Institute for Philosophy & Public Policy at the University of Maryland, and the National Commission for Civic Renewal, and helped found CIRCLE (Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement).
Levine's research focuses on Political Theory, American Politics, and Civic Studies, where he has helped develop Civic Studies as an international intellectual movement. His work spans theoretical explorations of civic life and practical applications in civic education. He was co-organizer and co-author of influential documents including The Civic Mission of Schools (2003), The College, Career & Citizenship Framework for State Social Studies Standards (2013), and The Educating for American Democracy Roadmap (2021), which have shaped civic education policy nationwide.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on civic engagement, democratic theory, and the intersection of political philosophy with practical civic applications. His work shows increasing attention to network models of belief formation, environmental justice, and the challenges facing democracy in contemporary society.
Levine has served on numerous civic organization boards including AmericaSpeaks, the American Bar Association Committee for Public Education, CivXNow, the Deliberative Democracy Consortium, and the Charles F. Kettering Foundation. He actively contributes to the Civic Studies field through summer institutes, journals like The Good Society, and academic associations.
