Holding a B.A. from Harvard University (1969) and an M.A. from the University of Chicago (1972), he has established himself as a significant figure in contemporary American literature.
His research interests span Creative Writing (particularly fiction and poetry), Contemporary Literature, World Literature, and Travel Writing. LaSalle's work consistently explores the boundaries between reality and dreamlike states, examining how ordinary American experiences can take on extraordinary dimensions through innovative narrative techniques and lyrical prose.
Analysis of his publications reveals a consistent focus on psychological depth, narrative experimentation, and the exploration of American identity through diverse settings including Paris, Buenos Aires, New York, and Chicago. His work often employs dreamlike atmospheres while maintaining strong character development, with recurring themes of memory, loss, desire, and the transformative power of literature itself.
