Peter Kruschwitz

Peter Kruschwitz is a Professor of Ancient History and Epigraphy at the University of Vienna's Department of Ancient History, Papyrology and Epigraphy, part of the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies. His research focuses on Roman cultural practices, particularly poetic expressions in epigraphic contexts. He directs major projects including MAPPOLA (mapping Roman poetic landscapes) and CARMEN (metrical epigraphy networks), funded by the European Research Council.

Kruschwitz's work explores Roman verse inscriptions, funerary poetry, migration narratives, and non-elite cultural expressions. His research intersects epigraphy, social history, and sensory studies, with emphasis on:

• Regional variations in Roman poetic traditions
• Multicultural interactions in frontier provinces
• Gender and class representation in inscriptions

His recent publications analyze recurring motifs in Latin epitaphs, sensory engagement with monuments, and micro-histories of marginalized groups. Awarded a Visiting Professorship in Humanities (2019), he maintains active fieldwork collaborations across Europe.

Notably, Kruschwitz's ERC grants support large-scale documentation of inscribed poetry across the Roman Empire. He supervises doctoral candidates in epigraphic studies and leads international teams analyzing provincial verse traditions.
