Dr. Karin Wiedergut is a Research Fellow affiliated with the University of Vienna's Department of Ancient History, Papyrology, and Epigraphy. She specializes in Roman legal and social history, particularly in Asia Minor. Her research focuses on public archives, notaries, and funerary law in ancient cities. During her Petra Kappert Fellowship at the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC) in 2021, she investigated the role of public archives in municipal frameworks and the interplay between inscriptions and archival practices. Her work bridges textual and material evidence to understand non-elite social dynamics and administrative systems in the Roman East.
Wiedergut holds a PhD from the University of Vienna (2020), where her dissertation examined public archives in the Roman provinces of Asia and Lycia et Pamphylia. She previously contributed to research projects at the Austrian Academy of Sciences on funerary law in Southwestern Asia Minor. Her expertise includes epigraphy, legal history, and the socio-economic contexts of non-elite groups in antiquity.
