Prof. Dr. Kaja Harter-Uibopuu is a Professor of Ancient History at the University of Hamburg, affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities and the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC). She serves as Co-Spokesperson of the Cluster of Excellence 'Understanding Written Artefacts' (UWA) and leads research projects on epigraphy, ancient law, and cultural heritage preservation. Her work focuses on Greek epigraphy, funerary law in Asia Minor, and the application of digital technologies in humanities research.
Education: Born in Graz, Austria (1968), she studied Ancient History and Classical Archaeology at the University of Salzburg and Graz, earning a doctorate in Ancient History and Antiquity (1997) and a Habilitation in 2016. She has held academic positions at institutions including the University of Innsbruck and the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
Research Interests: Greek legal history, constitutional history of Greek city-states, epigraphic analysis of inscriptions, and interdisciplinary approaches to manuscript and cultural heritage studies. She leads the 'Inscriptiones Graecae' project and collaborates on immersive VR technologies for epigraphic research.
Scientific Achievements: Member of prestigious academies (Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie, Hamburg Academy), recipient of the Viennovation Award, and author of over 80 publications. Her work bridges classical studies with digital humanities, advancing methodologies for epigraphic data curation and visualization.
Grants & Labs: Principal Investigator in multiple DFG and EU-funded projects, including the Cluster of Excellence UWA (2019–2025). Active in labs like the CSMC and the CISAL (Center for Ancient Law Studies). Supervised numerous PhD and master’s students in ancient history and epigraphy.
