Professor Peter Kinnell holds a Professorship in Metrology at Loughborough University, leading the Robust Intelligent Metrology Laboratory within the Intelligent Automation Centre. He previously held roles at GE Sensing and the University of Nottingham. His research spans manufacturing metrology, robotics, additive manufacturing, and sensor technology.
Education: MEng in Mechanical Engineering (University of Birmingham, 2001) and a PhD in Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) from the same institution, supported by EPSRC and GE Sensing. He participated in an Erasmus exchange at the Danish Technical University.
Research focuses on 3D concrete printing, industrial robotics, sensor development, and automation. Notable areas include in-situ measurements, quality control in additive manufacturing, and digital twin applications. Over 100 publications reflect his work in precision engineering and manufacturing processes.
Awarded an EPSRC Fellowship in Manufacturing. Current projects explore Industrial Robot-as-a-Service (IRaaS), sustainability in construction robotics, and advanced metrology systems for high-precision applications.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Robust Intelligent Metrology Lab, collaborating on projects involving hybrid manufacturing and robotics integration. Active in international conferences such as RILEM, contributing to advancements in digital concrete fabrication.
