Professor Richard Buswell is a leading academic in the field of Building Systems Engineering at Loughborough University. With over 30 years of experience in industry and academia, his research focuses on additive manufacturing in construction, particularly 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP). He pioneered the 'Freeform Construction' project, establishing 3DCP as a transformative technology for off-site construction. His work emphasizes sustainability, automation, and quality control in digital fabrication.
- Educations: BEng (Hons), PhD
- Affiliations: Hybrid Concrete Printing Group Lead, Building Energy Research Group Member
His research interests span structural composites, digital fabrication processes, and energy-efficient construction systems. Key projects include the EPSRC-funded 'Freeform Construction' (£1.2m over 5 years) and collaborations with global research councils. Recognized as an 'engineer to watch' by BSRIA, he advises BBC World in Business and contributes to RILEM standards.
His publications analyze material behavior, robotic integration, and sustainability in 3DCP. Awards include Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Current work explores hybrid printing systems, waste reduction, and next-generation manufacturing automation.
- Grants: EPSRC grants EP/S019618/1, EP/S031405/1, and Innovate UK projects
- Labs/Teams: Leads the Hybrid Concrete Printing Group and collaborates with RILEM TC on digital concrete fabrication
