Professor Peter Junk is a distinguished academic at James Cook University, holding the Nevitt Professorship in Chemistry. His research focuses on inorganic and organometallic chemistry of main group and lanthanoid elements, with particular emphasis on corrosion inhibitors, rare earth compounds, catalysis, and materials science. He has published over 488 peer-reviewed articles, secured $14M+ in research funding, and graduated over 40 PhD students. His work spans collaborations with industry and academia, addressing global challenges in rare earth resource utilization and sustainable materials.
His awards include the JCU Distinguished Professorship (2021), The Top Researcher Award in Inorganic Chemistry (2020), and the Burrows Award (2016). Junk serves on editorial boards, including the Journal of Organometallic Chemistry and Coordination Chemistry Reviews, and chairs major conferences like the International Conference of Organometallic Chemistry.
Research interests include rare earth-based corrosion inhibitors, luminescent materials, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). His labs develop advanced MOFs for sensing and catalysis, while his projects explore lanthanoid chemistry’s role in green energy and medical applications. Junk’s career reflects a blend of fundamental research and applied innovation, driven by strategic collaborations and industry partnerships.
