Peter Joshi is a Chancellor's Fellow and Honorary Fellow at the University of Edinburgh's Usher Institute within the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. His research bridges quantitative genetics and actuarial science to analyze complex traits, with primary focus on genomic determinants of lifespan and multi-omic approaches to aging reversal.
His academic credentials include:
- BSc Mathematics (1987, University of Edinburgh)
- Diploma Actuarial Science (1988, Heriot-Watt University)
- Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries (1990)
- MSc Quantitative Genetics (2011, University of Edinburgh)
- PhD Complex Trait Genetics (2015, University of Edinburgh)
His research integrates two complementary strands: large-scale genomic analysis of lifespan through international consortia (24 cohorts, 1+ million subjects), and multi-omic investigation of aging biomarkers with potential reversal pathways. Previous work established foundational knowledge on parental relatedness effects using runs of homozygosity methodology.
His major recognitions include:
- Runner Up Charles Epstein Award, American Society of Human Genetics (2019)
- Winner Lodewijk Sandkuijl Award, European Society of Human Genetics (2015)
Peter supervises one current PhD student (Erin Macdonald Dunlop) and has successfully guided four doctoral candidates to completion, maintaining active grant funding for international collaborative research in genomic longevity studies.
