Professor Peter J. Haas is a faculty member at the Lucas College and Graduate School of Business and the Department of Political Science at San José State University (SJSU). He also serves as the Education Director for the Mineta Transportation Institute since 2001, a federally funded research organization. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1985), along with previous teaching roles at institutions such as the University of North Carolina and Virginia Tech.
Professor Haas specializes in Public Administration, Transportation Policy, and Policy Analysis, with notable contributions to textbook co-authorships on policy research and political films. His research emphasizes applied policy analysis, transit safety, workforce development for high-speed rail, and the intersection of film and politics. He has authored/co-authored numerous journal articles, monographs, and serves as a consultant to government and nonprofit agencies.
His awards include the August Warburton Award for Outstanding Scholarship (2011). Research highlights include studies on transit ridership trends, high-speed rail workforce needs, and the effectiveness of transportation security campaigns. He has also led initiatives like the High Speed Rail Learning System (HSRLS) and contributed to panels on transportation education and livability programs.
Outside academia, Professor Haas enjoys film analysis and is an advocate for civic engagement, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to public policy and governance.
