Dr. Peter Hopcroft, a Birmingham Fellow at the University of Birmingham's School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, specializes in Earth System modeling and paleoclimatology. His research focuses on understanding and predicting climate change in past and future contexts, with particular attention to pre-industrial periods, methane cycles, and abrupt climate events during the last glacial period.
- BSc (Hons) Physics with studies in musical performance, Imperial College London & Royal College of Music (2004)
- PhD Geophysics, Imperial College London (2009)
Hopcroft's work bridges climate modeling with Bayesian inference methods, exploring connections between past climate events and future projections. His key research areas include:
- Green Sahara and paleo-monsoon variations
- Paleo mineral dust cycles
- Methane cycle dynamics
- Climate sensitivity analysis
- Volcanic impacts on climate
- Bayesian environmental inference
Recent publications highlight his contributions to:
- El Niño-Southern Oscillation frequency analysis (2025)
- Global wetland methane emissions modeling (2025)
- Methane budget quantification (2025)
- Volcanic cluster climate responses (2025)
- African Humid Period termination signals (2024)
- Tropical vegetation-methane connections (2024)
