Education: PhD in Physiology and Biochemistry from the University of Graz (1978). His research focuses on gut-brain interactions, particularly microbiota signaling, neuropeptides, and neurogenic inflammation. He explores how gut-derived signals influence brain function and behavior, with contributions to understanding opioid systems and vagal afferent pathways.
His work is supported by grants from Austrian ministries, the European Union, and private foundations. Notable awards include the Brain, Behavior, and Immunity Impact Award (2020), the Grand Decoration of Honour (2006), and recognition as a Highly Cited Researcher in Pharmacology (2003).
