معرفی
Peter Hoet is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, KU Leuven, where he serves as Head of the Environment and Health unit and Subdivision Head of RAREC within the Department of Public Health and Primary Care. He is actively involved in multiple research initiatives including the Leuven One Health Institute, the KU Leuven Institute for Mobility, and the KU Leuven Institute for Urban Studies. His leadership extends to various committees including the Ethische Commissie Dierproeven and several faculty and departmental councils.
Professor Hoet's research focuses on environmental health with particular emphasis on:
- Exposome and immunome interactions
- Toxicology of nanoparticles and microplastics
- Silica exposure and autoimmune diseases
- Air pollution health effects
- Respiratory disease mechanisms
His recent work demonstrates a strong focus on connecting environmental exposures to immune responses, particularly examining how particulate matter, silica, and other environmental stressors trigger or exacerbate autoimmune conditions. The research employs advanced methodologies including Raman spectroscopy for particle detection, 3D cell culture models for toxicity testing, and longitudinal imaging techniques to monitor disease progression.
Professor Hoet currently leads or co-leads multiple research projects funded through KU Leuven and European initiatives, with ongoing work extending through 2029-2030. His research portfolio includes studies on the health economic impact of immune-mediated diseases linked to environmental pollution, causal determinants of these diseases, micro- and nanoplastic analysis, and development of 3D models for respiratory toxicity studies.
He serves as promoter or co-promoter for several PhD students, guiding research in environmental health and toxicology. His laboratory work includes the Environment and Health unit and participation in the EXIMIOUS project team focused on mapping exposure-induced immune effects.
