Peter Hendricks

Peter Hendricks is a Professor of Psychiatry - Behavioral Neurobiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), School of Medicine, and holds concurrent roles as Director of Research in the School of Public Health - Health Behavior. He earned his PhD in Psychology from the University of South Florida in 2006. His research focuses on psychedelic science, substance use disorders, public health, and mental health outcomes, with an emphasis on translating findings into clinical practice and policy. Hendricks has led over 174 teaching activities across multiple terms, including courses like HB799 Doctoral Dissertation Research and HB602 Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

His work spans interdisciplinary collaborations, addressing topics such as psychedelic safety, trauma-informed care, and health equity. He actively mentors PhD candidates in dissertation committees, emphasizing evidence-based approaches to addiction medicine and behavioral health. Recent projects include analyzing longitudinal associations between psychedelic use and mental health outcomes, as well as developing strategies for psychedelic research program establishment.

Hendricks’ academic leadership includes roles as Senior Scientist in UAB’s O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and School of Medicine departments. His contributions to the field have advanced understanding of psychedelics’ therapeutic potential, risk mitigation, and cultural considerations in healthcare.
