Peter Hellings is a full Professor at KU Leuven's Faculty of Medicine, Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Transplantation. He is affiliated with the Experimental Oto-rhino-laryngology Research Group and the Unit Allergy and Clinical Immunology Research Group. He is also a member of Leuven One Health – KU Leuven One Health Institute and serves on the Faculty Council of Medicine and Departmental Council for Microbiology, Immunology and Transplantation as a ZAP member.
Professor Hellings specializes in otorhinolaryngology with a focus on chronic rhinosinusitis, nasal polyps, and the immunological mechanisms underlying these conditions. His research explores the role of epithelial barriers, basal cells, and neuro-immune interactions in respiratory diseases. He actively investigates Type 2 inflammation pathways and develops novel therapeutic approaches targeting mucosal barriers in chronic rhinosinusitis patients. His work bridges clinical practice with fundamental immunological research, aiming to improve diagnosis and treatment of complex airway diseases.
His recent publications (2025) reveal a strong focus on chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), Type 2 inflammation biomarkers, and epithelial barrier function. The research spans from basic science investigating basal cell-immune interactions to clinical studies on patient stratification, surgical outcomes, and novel therapeutic approaches. Notably, he contributes to EUFOREA consensus statements on rhinoplasty informed consent, global airways concepts, and asthma care, demonstrating leadership in European allergy and rhinology communities.
Professor Hellings serves as promoter or co-promoter for multiple significant research projects including 'Basal instinct' investigating basal cell function in CRSwNP, 'Towards better care for chronic sinus disease,' and studies on neuro-immune mechanisms in rhinitis. His research is well-funded with projects extending through 2027, indicating sustained research activity and institutional support.
He supervises doctoral students including Viskens A-S and Ruysseveldt E, focusing on chronic rhinosinusitis care and airway basal cell-immunity interactions respectively. His research group collaborates extensively with international networks including the European CRS Outcome Registry (CHRINOSOR) and EUFOREA workshops, positioning him at the forefront of translational research in airway immunology.
