Peter Hatlie is a Professor of Classics at the University of Dallas, based on its Rome Campus. He has served as Academic Dean, Director, and Vice-President on the Rome Campus from 2005 to 2023. His expertise spans Late-Antique, Medieval, and Byzantine History, with a focus on monasticism, cultural heritage, and classical antiquity.
Education:
- PhD in Byzantine History, Fordham University (1992)
- M.A. in Medieval History, Fordham University (1985)
- B.A. in Classics and Humanities, St. Olaf College (1983)
Research interests include Byzantine Constantinople’s monasticism (850-1200 AD), Gothic Italy under Belisarius, and the archaeology of Ancient Bovillae. His publications blend academic rigor with accessible guides for travelers and scholars.
He has received the University of Dallas King Fellowship (2023) and twice won the Haggerty Excellence in Teaching Award (2019, 2024). Current projects advocate for cultural heritage preservation and explore Byzantine military history.
