Dr. Lucas McMahon is a Research Fellow in the Department of Classics at the University of Winnipeg, supported by a prestigious Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship (2024–2026). Previously, he held a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Ottawa (2022–2024). He earned his PhD in History from Princeton University (2022), with prior degrees from the University of Calgary (BA), Central European University (MA in Medieval Studies), and the University of Ottawa (MA in Classics).

His research focuses on Late Roman and Byzantine history, pre-industrial states, and digital spatial analysis (GIS). Current projects include Information and Empire in New Rome, AD 600–1200, examining the role of information control in Byzantine governance, and Mapping Medieval Metadata, a digital humanities project analyzing Byzantine lead seals.
Publications span peer-reviewed articles, book reviews, and digital humanities initiatives. His work bridges traditional historiography with innovative methods like GIS to explore themes such as borders, foreign relations, and the lived experience of empire.

Collaborations include working with Dr. Conor Whately on Byzantine soldiers’ sensory experiences, using Manitoba landscapes as comparative models for Byzantine environments. His research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to understanding medieval state structures and their impact on daily life.
He leads the Mapping Medieval Metadata project, hosted by Princeton’s Center for Digital Humanities, which provides open-access datasets for Byzantine studies.
