Peter Hanenberg

Peter Hanenberg is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences (FCH) of Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP). He holds a PhD in Modern Languages and Literatures from the University of Bamberg, Germany (1993). From 1988 to 1995, he was an assistant professor at the University of Bamberg, later serving as Coordinator of German Studies at UCP Viseu (1995–2006). Since 2006, he has been affiliated with FCH-Lisbon, where he became Vice-Dean (2016–2019) and currently serves as Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation and Director of the Católica Doctoral School (CADOS). He leads the Research Centre for Communication and Culture (CECC) since 2012.

Research Interests Focus on European literature and culture since the 16th century, cognitive-cultural intersections, translation studies, and the idea of Europe. Key themes include cultural resilience, transnational families, and interdisciplinary approaches to art and cognition.

Publications Over 100 works, including books like Cognition, Culture, and the Arts (2021) and European Humanism in the Making (2021). Recent research explores migration narratives, academic careers, and well-being in transnational contexts.

Grants & Leadership Coordinates major projects such as the EUROPE'S CRISES initiative and contributes to institutional strategies for research and doctoral education. His academic roles emphasize bridging cultural and cognitive sciences.

Labs/Teams Heads CECC and CADOS, fostering interdisciplinary research and doctoral training. Collaborates with international networks on projects like HOPE and DIS/CONNECT.
