Peter Gruss is an Honorary Professor at the University of Göttingen and former President of the Max Planck Society (2002-2014). His academic career includes roles as Director of the Department of Molecular Cell Biology at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry and leadership in international scientific organizations. He has held positions across institutions including the NIH (USA) and the German Cancer Research Center.
Research focuses on developmental biology, gene regulation, and mammalian nervous system development. Notable contributions include studies on Pax gene functions in cell differentiation and pancreatic development. Awards include the German Future Prize, Leibniz Prize, and international recognitions for science leadership.
Gruss has advised on stem cell policies and contributed to foundational work on apoptosis regulation (Apaf1) and retinal progenitor cell biology. His career spans over four decades with extensive contributions to molecular biology and developmental genetics.
