Peter Grajzl is the John F. Hendon Professor of Economics at Washington and Lee University's Williams School. His research examines how political and economic institutions shape development outcomes, with particular focus on historical legal systems and their long-term economic consequences.
His interdisciplinary work combines econometrics, machine learning, and historical analysis to study institutional evolution across centuries. Major research streams include: the coevolution of legal ideas and economic development in early-modern England; judicial decision-making patterns; bankruptcy institutions; and financial inclusion initiatives through Native Community Development Financial Institutions.
Recent publications demonstrate strong methodological innovation, applying computational text analysis to historical legal documents and developing novel approaches to measure institutional change. His 2024-2025 articles reflect sustained focus on law-economy interactions across diverse contexts including asylum courts, bankruptcy proceedings, and indigenous finance.
