Peter Gibson is a Professor (Research) in the Department of Gastroenterology at the School of Translational Medicine, Monash University. He serves as Head of Luminal Gastroenterology Research, leading a broad and impactful research program focused on chronic gastrointestinal conditions.
His research interests span several key areas in gastroenterology, including:
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), with clinical and mechanistic studies on thiopurines, anti-TNF agents, and novel biologics like vedolizumab and ustekinumab
- Functional gastrointestinal disorders, particularly the Low FODMAP diet and nutraceuticals in IBS
- Coeliac disease and its cognitive implications
- Eosinophilic oesophagitis
- Role of vitamin D and the renin-angiotensin system in IBD pathogenesis
His recent publications reflect a strong focus on therapeutic optimization in IBD, dietary interventions, and gut barrier physiology. These works span clinical trials, pharmacokinetic modeling, and mechanistic studies, indicating a translational research approach bridging bench and bedside. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
Peter Gibson has secured and led numerous research projects, including industry-sponsored multicentre trials and investigator-initiated studies. He frequently collaborates with researchers across Australia and internationally, particularly through the Australia and New Zealand IBD Consortium. His leadership extends to mentoring and supervising junior researchers and students, evident from his role as Primary Chief Investigator on multiple grants.
He is actively involved in several research programs:
- Luminal Gastroenterology Research program
- Australia and New Zealand IBD Consortium
- Clinical trials network for biologic therapies in IBD
- Diet and gut health research, including the FAD-UC study on food additives
