Dr. Peter Ely is a Lecturer in English Literature at Kingston University's Department of Humanities within the Kingston School of Art. His research explores contemporary British fiction through frameworks of continental philosophy and critical theory, with particular focus on concepts of community, gender, sexuality, and race.
Dr. Ely holds a PhD from Kingston University, MA from Nottingham University, and BA from Nottingham University. He is currently completing a monograph titled The Politics of Community in Contemporary British Fiction and co-edited Community in Contemporary British Fiction: From Blair to Brexit (Bloomsbury, 2022).
His research examines:
- Constructions of community in post-Brexit literature
- Queer theory applications to contemporary fiction
- Intersections of race and identity in British literature
- Philosophical approaches to literary subjectivity
Publications analyze works by Jackie Kay and Hari Kunzru, investigating how contemporary authors represent complex social relationships and identity formations. His work consistently addresses themes of belonging, exclusion, and the political dimensions of literary representation.
Dr. Ely currently teaches the 'Being Human' Foundation module, introducing students to core concepts in literary and cultural studies.
