Peter Decherney holds the Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Endowed Term Chair in the Humanities at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is Professor of Cinema & Media Studies and Director of the Penn Global Documentary Institute. He also has secondary appointments at the Annenberg School for Communication and an affiliation with the Penn Law Center for Technology, Innovation, and Competition. His work bridges academia, filmmaking, and activism, focusing on copyright law, global media, and cultural studies.
Decherney’s research explores the intersection of film history, intellectual property, and digital media. He has authored seven books, including Hollywood’s Copyright Wars and Hollywood: A Very Short Introduction, and written for major publications like The New York Times. His award-winning films address global migration, African Jewish communities, and post-disaster recovery, such as THE HEART OF PUERTO RICO, which won Best VR Experience at the AT&T Film Awards.
As an educator, Decherney teaches courses on media studies, virtual reality, and copyright law, reaching over 80,000 learners through his open online course on Hollywood history. His honors include fellowships from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the American Council of Learned Societies, alongside U.S. State Department recognition as an Arts Envoy to Myanmar.
Current projects include documentaries on South African Yiddish singer Leigh Nudelman and the Lemba Jewish community in South Africa/Zimbabwe. His work emphasizes participatory and immersive storytelling, leveraging VR technology to explore human experiences across cultures and histories.
