Ryan Jay Friedman is a Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of English at The Ohio State University, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. Specializing in film studies, African American literature, and critical theory, his research focuses on early African American film, racial politics in classical Hollywood, and the social histories of American cinema. He holds a PhD from Northwestern University (2004) and a BA from the University of Notre Dame (1998).
His notable works include Hollywood’s African American Films: The Transition to Sound (2011) and The Movies as a World Force: American Silent Cinema and the Utopian Imagination (2019). Friedman has contributed to journals such as Quarterly Review of Film & Video and English Literary History, with current research exploring Black independent films and WWII-era Hollywood specialty numbers.
Awarded the Diversity Enhancement Faculty Award (2020–2021) and multiple international travel grants, Friedman has served as Director of the Film Studies Program (2015–2019) and chairs the Department’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee. He teaches courses on film and American society, African American literature, and film theory, mentoring numerous graduate students.
