Peter Carmeliet serves as a Full Professor at KU Leuven's Faculty of Medicine, Department of Oncology, and has been a VIB Group Leader since 1996. He heads the Laboratory of Angiogenesis and Vascular Metabolism (VIB-KU Leuven) and is a member of both the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology and LKI - KU Leuven Cancer Institute. His institutional roles include membership on the Council of the Faculty of Medicine and Council of the Department of Oncology as senior academic staff.
His research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of blood vessel formation (angiogenesis) in health and disease, with particular emphasis on vascular heterogeneity and vascular metabolism. His laboratory investigates how abnormal blood vessel growth contributes to disorders including cancer, age-related blindness, stroke, and diabetes, aiming to develop novel pro- or anti-angiogenic therapies.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on vascular biology intersecting with immunology and metabolic regulation, particularly examining endothelial cell dysfunction in disease contexts. His work increasingly incorporates artificial intelligence approaches for target discovery in immunomodulation.
- Member of VIB-KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology
- Head of Laboratory of Angiogenesis and Vascular Metabolism
- Senior academic staff on Faculty of Medicine Council
His current research program includes multiple major projects through 2028, particularly focusing on immunomodulatory endothelial cells, AI-driven target discovery for cancer immunotherapy, and vascular complications in metabolic diseases like NASH and diabetes. He leads several large-scale initiatives investigating novel immunostimulatory genes and endothelial cell dysfunction mechanisms.
