Peter CJM van der Wielen

Peter CJM van der Wielen serves as part-time professor of Reliability Grid Components with the Electrical Energy Systems group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) Department of Electrical Engineering. His primary professional role is with DNV GL - Energy, where he functions as Business Director for Power Failure Investigations and Principal Consultant in Power Cables.

He earned his MSc in Electrical Engineering from TU/e in 2000 and completed his PhD in 2005 for research on on-line monitoring of partial discharges in medium voltage power cables, which evolved into the commercial "Smart Cable Guard" system. His academic credentials are complemented by extensive industry experience.

His research focuses on grid component reliability, remaining life estimations, degradation and failure mechanisms, and power cable diagnostics. He initiates and coordinates research while teaching students on grid component reliability topics and lecturing in DNV GL training courses on power cables, condition assessment, and failure investigations.

His publications from 2024-2025 demonstrate ongoing research activity in power cable monitoring, load profile scenarios, and grid utilization optimization, showing his continued relevance in electrical power systems research.

As an active researcher with over 80 scientific publications, he regularly serves as a reviewer and provides plenary and invited speeches at international conferences.
