Peter Bryant

Dr Peter Bryant is an Associate Tutor in Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection at the Department of Physics, School of Mathematics and Physics, University of Surrey. He is also an Honorary Recognised Teacher at the University of Liverpool and an Industry Lecturer at the University of Bath, contributing to curriculum development and postgraduate education in radioactive waste management and radiation protection. He is a Chartered Radiation Protection Professional (CRadP) and Chartered Physicist (CPhys), with extensive industry experience at EDF Nuclear New Build and prior consultancy roles at Arup, Arcadis, and Frazer-Nash.

His research interests span radiation protection, nuclear safety, radiological dose assessment, radioactive waste management, and safety culture. He actively works on integrating radiological and conventional hazards into holistic risk assessments (ALARA/ALARP) and developing competency frameworks in radiation protection. His expertise also includes novel dose assessment techniques, skyshine modeling, and the chemical toxicity of uranium.

His publications demonstrate a strong focus on practical and regulatory aspects of nuclear safety, with recurring themes in cultural integration in international nuclear projects, risk integration, and workforce development. He has contributed significantly to the IRPA workstream on ALARA and has published on methodologies that challenge conventional assumptions in dose estimation and safety modeling.

Dr Bryant has received several accolades, including the Society for Radiological Protection’s Founders Medal and invitations as a Keynote Speaker at major international conferences such as IRPA and SRP. He is President Elect of the SRP and plays a key role in shaping radiation protection policy in the UK and internationally.

He advises on CPD and BSc module development at the University of Liverpool and serves on the Postgraduate Advisory Board at the University of Surrey. While he does not appear to lead a formal research lab, he collaborates with industry and academic partners on nuclear safety initiatives and contributes to national and international policy discussions, particularly around the EURATOM Treaty and supply chain safety culture.
