Steven P. Snay

Steven P. Snay, Ph.D., CHP, serves as the Director of Radiation Safety and Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Physics & Applied Physics at the Kennedy College of Sciences, University of Massachusetts Lowell. He oversees the campus radiation safety program for ionizing and non-ionizing radiation sources including sealed and unsealed radioactive materials, lasers, magnets, ultraviolet, and radio-frequency sources.

Dr. Snay holds the following educational qualifications:

• Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology from UMass Lowell (2018)
• Master of Science in Radiological Sciences and Protection from UMass Lowell (2007)
• Baccalaureate in Physics with a Radiological Health Physics Option from UMass Lowell (2005)
• Associate in Nuclear Engineering from Three Rivers Community College (2003)

His research expertise lies in Radiation and Laser Safety, with a focus on radiation detection techniques, development of online applications for safety program streamlining, and laser-induced ionizing radiation. He is also highly skilled in the DOT/IATA shipping of radioactive materials, dose assessment, regulatory compliance, radiation instrumentation, and source calibration.

As a board Certified Health Physicist (CHP) by the American Academy of Health Physics, Dr. Snay has mentored over 60 students who have become professional Health Physicists. He coordinates the Radiological Sciences Internship program and actively engages with the professional community by hosting training events for organizations such as the FBI, state police, Army, and emergency response teams. He previously served as President of the New England Chapter of the Health Physics Society.
