Peter Arvan is the William K and Delores S Brehm Professor of Type 1 Diabetes Research and a Professor at the University of Michigan Medical School, affiliated with the Departments of Internal Medicine and Molecular and Integrative Physiology. He holds an MD and PhD from Yale University School of Medicine (1984) and an AB from Cornell University (1981).

Dr. Arvan’s research focuses on Type 1 Diabetes, endocrinology, and molecular physiology, particularly the mechanisms of proinsulin folding, β-cell development, and ER stress pathways. His recent work explores mitochondrial signaling, protein degradation systems, and genetic influences on metabolic tissue identity.
His publications highlight advancements in understanding insulin biosynthesis, thyroid hormonogenesis, and ER-associated degradation, with a focus on therapeutic targets for diabetes and metabolic disorders.
