Peter A. Coclanis serves as the Albert R. Newsome Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with additional appointments as Adjunct Professor of Economics, Director of the Global Research Institute, and Faculty Affiliate in both Asian Studies and Peace, War, and Defense programs.
Coclanis is a distinguished historian specializing in economic history, agricultural history, and demographic history, with research spanning from seventeenth-century South Carolina to twentieth-century Burma. His work in historical anthropometrics uses data on physical stature of historical populations to explore broader questions of biological and material well-being. His publications cover American, Southeast Asian, and global economic history from the 17th century to the present day, with particular focus on agricultural history, economic development, environmental history, and demographic history.
His research output demonstrates consistent scholarly contributions over four decades, with publications ranging from early work on colonial Charleston mortality rates (1984) to recent analyses of anthropometric history (2013). The thematic continuity across his career reveals a sustained interest in the intersection of economic forces, demographic patterns, and biological outcomes across diverse geographical contexts.
- Gladys L. Baker Award for lifetime achievements in agricultural history (2019)
- Elected Fellow of the Society of American Historians
- Elected Fellow of the Agricultural History Society
Coclanis has presided over three international professional organizations and maintains an active research agenda. His current projects include a book on the integration of world rice markets (1700-1920), studies on Burma/Myanmar and the Greater Mekong Subregion, and various projects on the economic history of the U.S. South. As Director of the Global Research Institute, he oversees international scholarly initiatives while continuing his own research program.
