Maitrii Aung-Thwin is an Associate Professor of Myanmar/Southeast Asian History at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where he coordinates the Comparative Asian Studies PhD Program. As Deputy Director of the Asia Research Institute (NUS) and President-elect of the Burma Studies Foundation (USA), he shapes regional academic discourse. His editorial role at the Journal of Southeast Asian Studies and leadership positions in professional organizations like the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) reflect his field prominence.
His research focuses on colonial and postcolonial Myanmar, examining nation-building, heritage, identity politics, and resistance through lenses of transnationalism, ethno-history, and socio-legal studies. Key works include A History of Myanmar Since Ancient Times (2013) and The Return of the Galon King (2011). Current projects analyze colonial scholar-officials’ influence on Southeast Asian historiography and transnational Buddhist networks.
