Dr. Pete Bettinger is the Leon 'Buddy' Hargreaves Jr. Distinguished Professor in Forest Management and Professor of Landscape Planning and Harvest Scheduling at the University of Georgia's Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. He holds editorial board positions across six journals, coordinates IUFRO Division 4.04.00 (Forest Management Planning), and has authored five textbooks including Forest Management and Planning. With over 180 peer-reviewed articles, his research focuses on applied forest management, geospatial technologies, precision forestry, and sustainability planning.
Education: Bachelors and Masters from Virginia Tech, PhD from Oregon State University. Teaching includes Forest Planning, Introduction to Forestry, and Aerial Photogrammetry. Awards include dual national research/teaching honors from the Society of American Foresters, a 2023 Forest Science Award, and 2021 USDA Excellence in Teaching recognition. Active in outreach via continuing education courses on GIS and disaster response (e.g., forests and hurricanes).
Service includes leadership in the Southern Forestry GIS Conference and editorial roles. His work integrates spatial modeling, economic analysis, and policy frameworks to address contemporary forestry challenges. Current projects explore AI applications in forest monitoring, sustainable harvest scheduling, and carbon sequestration optimization.
