Dr. Dehai Zhao is a Senior Research Scientist and Graduate Faculty member at the University of Georgia's Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, specializing in Forest Biometrics and Statistics. His research focuses on growth and yield modeling, ecological dynamics, and quantitative silviculture. He holds a PhD in Forest Biometrics/Management from UGA and has held academic roles including Visiting Professor at the University of New Brunswick and Assistant/Associate Professor at Nanjing Forestry University.
Education: PhD (University of Georgia - Forest Biometrics/Management), MS (University of Georgia - Statistics), MS (Nanjing Forestry University - Forest Biometrics), BS (Nanjing Forestry University - Forest Science).
Research Interests:
- Quantitative analysis of forest ecosystems, including biomass, carbon sequestration, and soil-nutrient interactions
- Development of predictive models for plantation management and stand dynamics
- Optimization of silvicultural practices through statistical and biometric approaches
Notable Awards: Lifetime Achievement Award (2021), SOMENS NTTF Research Excellence Award, USDA FIA Director's Award (2023). He also served on UGA committees like the Research Scientist Promotion Committee (2018-2021) and Faculty Affairs Committee (2022-2025).
Contributions include over 100 peer-reviewed articles on topics such as pine plantation productivity, biomass equations, and soil-based site assessments. He leads the Plantation Management Research Cooperative (PMRC), focusing on long-term experimental studies in loblolly and slash pine ecosystems.
