Pertti Panula serves as Research Director at the Department of Anatomy within the Neuroscience Center at the University of Helsinki. He holds dual roles as Supervisor for the Doctoral Programme in Integrative Life Science and the Doctoral Programme Brain & Mind. His institutional affiliations extend to the Helsinki In Vivo Animal Imaging Platform and the Zebrafish Unit which he manages as a core facility.
Dr. Panula's research focuses on neurosciences, with particular expertise in histaminergic systems, zebrafish models of brain development, and neurodegenerative diseases. His laboratory investigates neural circuitry, histamine receptors, and molecular mechanisms underlying brain function and disease. The research program combines advanced imaging, molecular biology, and genetic approaches using zebrafish as a primary model organism.
With 186 documented publications spanning several decades, Panula's work shows consistent productivity with recent publications in high-impact journals including Nature Communications and NPJ Parkinson's Disease. His research output demonstrates a clear trajectory from fundamental neuroanatomy to disease modeling, with increasing focus on translational applications in recent years.
