Perry P. J. Yang is a Professor and Director of the Eco Urban Lab at Georgia Institute of Technology, affiliated with the School of City and Regional Planning and the School of Architecture. His research focuses on integrating data analytics and systems science into urban design for ecological and energy resilience. He holds visiting roles at the University of Tokyo (2022–2023) and Cambridge University (2023), and previously served as the Bayer Chair Professor at Tongji University (2014–2018).
Education includes a Ph.D. in Building and Planning from National Taiwan University, M.S. in Urban Studies from MIT, and B.Sc. in Agriculture Engineering from National Taiwan University. His work spans smart city projects in Tokyo (e.g., Urawa Misono for 2020 Olympics), Hangzhou Asian Games Village design, and Musi River Revitalization in Hyderabad.
Research interests emphasize urban systems design, digital twins, renewable energy integration, and sustainable urbanism. Key projects include the Carbon-Neutrality Architecting framework and CANVAS initiative for Tokyo. He has pioneered algal cultivation systems for closed-loop communities and developed GIS-based energy modeling tools.
Awards include top prizes in international urban design competitions like the 2009 World Games Park in Kaohsiung (CNN-featured eco venue). Publications exceed 50 articles and a co-edited 2020 Elsevier book on Urban Systems Design. He serves on scientific committees for ICAE and UPE, and leads the Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems at Georgia Tech.
