Prof. J. Alexander Schmidt is a Professor and Head of the Institute of City Planning and Urban Design at the University of Duisburg-Essen since 1998. His work bridges academic research and professional practice in urban development, with 25+ years of experience as an architect and city planner. He holds a Ph.D. from University Stuttgart (1989) and an M.Arch. from UC Berkeley (1978).
Research focuses on evolutionary principles in urban transformation, integrating environmental engineering with planning disciplines. Current projects include large-scale urban development consulting for the French Ministry of Culture and collaborations with Tongji University (Shanghai) and the University of Oregon. His practice spans Germany, Asia, and South America, addressing issues like mobility, energy, and historic preservation.
Teaching emphasizes multidisciplinary urban planning education, combining technical expertise with design principles. He has served as a visiting professor at UC Berkeley and the University of Oregon's Urban Architecture Program.
