Perry Anderson is a British intellectual and Distinguished Professor of History and Sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He previously taught at the New School for Social Research in New York during the 1980s and served as editor of the New Left Review from 1962–1982, shaping the trajectory of Western Marxism. Educated at Eton College and Worcester College, Oxford, his work bridges historical sociology, intellectual history, and cultural analysis with a focus on Marxist theory.
His research explores themes such as the transition from feudalism to capitalism, the critique of postmodernism, and the political dynamics of Europe and the Global South. Anderson’s influence extends through seminal works like Passages from Antiquity to Feudalism and Lineages of the Absolutist State, which redefined Marxist historiography. He has also engaged in polemics with figures like E.P. Thompson over structuralist Marxism.
Anderson’s recent publications analyze contemporary political formations, including critiques of American foreign policy and explorations of European integration. His interdisciplinary approach synthesizes historical materialism with cultural critique, offering incisive analyses of global power structures and ideological transformations.
