Pernille Røge is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Pittsburgh. Her work focuses on eighteenth-century France, early modern empires, and Atlantic history. She holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge (2010) and has held visiting positions at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and Stanford University. Røge’s research explores the political economy of colonial empires, particularly France’s reinvention of its empire during the Age of Revolutions. Her first book, *Economistes and the Reinvention of Empire*, examines economic ideas shaping French colonial policies in Africa and the Americas. A current project, *A Gateway to Empire*, investigates Danish colonial commerce through the lens of European merchant networks. She co-leads Pitt’s *Gun Violence and its Histories* initiative and founded the *Early Modern Worlds Initiative*, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
Her teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses on European history, the French Revolution, and imperial studies. Notable awards include a 2024 Fulbright-Hays Grant and a Dietrich Innovation Initiative Award. Røge’s research has been supported by grants from the Hewlett Foundation, the Center for African Studies, and multiple University of Pittsburgh initiatives.
Her scholarship bridges economic history, imperial studies, and global history, emphasizing trans-imperial networks and the intersection of capitalism with colonial governance. Recent work addresses free/unfree labor in port cities and the transatlantic abolitionist movement.
