Pernilla Syrjä is an Assistant Professor at the University of Helsinki, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Biosciences. She is affiliated with Helsinki One Health Research and Brainstorm in Veterinary and Comparative Pathology research groups. Her work spans veterinary pathology, comparative medicine, and translational research with a strong focus on canine diseases.
Dr. Syrjä's research interests center on veterinary pathology with particular emphasis on canine neurological disorders, gastrointestinal diseases, and breed-specific conditions. Her work combines histopathological analysis with molecular approaches to understand disease mechanisms in dogs. She has made significant contributions to understanding neurodegenerative diseases in Lagotto Romagnolo dogs, gastric disorders in various breeds, and respiratory conditions in Irish Wolfhounds. Her research often bridges veterinary and human medicine, contributing to comparative pathology and One Health initiatives.
Analysis of Dr. Syrjä's recent publications reveals a strong focus on translational veterinary pathology, with particular attention to breed-specific diseases in dogs. Her work spans neurology, gastroenterology, and respiratory medicine, often investigating the molecular and histopathological basis of conditions. She frequently collaborates on genomic studies, as evidenced by her involvement in the Dog Genome Annotation Project, and maintains an active interest in diagnostic techniques and their refinement.
- Eläinlääkäripäivien Posterinäyttelyn Ensimmäinen palkinto (2009)
- Poster award (2017)

Dr. Syrjä serves as a supervisor for doctoral students, including co-supervising the PhD thesis of Vappu Hukkinen on recurrent bacterial pneumonia in Irish Wolfhounds. She has secured significant research funding from multiple sources including the Research Council of Finland, Eläinlääketieteen tutkimuksen tukisäätiö (ETTS), University of Helsinki funds, and other foundations. Her current projects span from 2023 to 2028, with total funding exceeding €140,000, demonstrating strong support for her research program.
Dr. Syrjä is actively involved in the Helsinki One Health Research initiative and Brainstorm in Veterinary and Comparative Pathology group. She collaborates extensively with researchers across disciplines and institutions, contributing to large-scale projects like the Dog Genome Annotation Project. Her work often involves multidisciplinary teams combining pathology, genetics, and clinical veterinary medicine to address complex disease mechanisms in companion animals.
