Professor Penny Bickle is a leading scholar in Funerary Archaeology and Neolithic Europe at the University of York's Department of Archaeology. She holds a professorship, having previously served as Senior Lecturer (2019) and Lecturer (2014) there. Her research focuses on the social dynamics of Europe’s first farmers, employing bioarchaeological methods to analyze burial practices, diet, and mobility. Key roles include Director of the MA and MSc Funerary Archaeology programs.
Educated at the University of Sheffield (BA, 2002), Cardiff University (Masters, 2004; PhD, 2009), she pursued postdoctoral work on projects like the LBK lifeways (2012) and Times of Their Lives (2017). Current projects include NEOPOT (2020–2022), Counter Culture (2018–2020), and collaborations in Slovakia and Alsace. Her work bridges theoretical archaeology and scientific methodologies, with a focus on gender, kinship, and social inequality in prehistoric societies.
Publications span 60+ articles and book chapters, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to Neolithic lifeways. She actively engages in media, including BBC and Guardian features, and serves on editorial boards like Gallia Préhistoire. Professional memberships include the Prehistoric Society and Association for Environmental Archaeology.
