Dr. Penny Bailey is a Teaching Associate at the School of Languages and Cultures, part of the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at The University of Queensland. With a PhD thesis examining Joseon Dynasty ceramics, her academic career focuses on Korean and Japanese art history, postcolonial critique, and translation studies.
Her research explores the intersection of Korean and Japanese visual culture, particularly through colonial-era aesthetics, ceramic traditions, and the transnational influence of the Mingei movement. She has translated and interpreted seminal texts by Japanese art critic Yanagi Soetsu, while analyzing their reception in Korean and Australian contexts.
Recent publications span topics like the Sipjangsaeng iconography of longevity, Margaret Preston's Japanese-inspired modernism, and Korean ceramic aesthetics. She maintains active memberships in the Japan Art History Forum and Japanese Studies Association of Australia.
