Professor Sir Peng Tee Khaw is Professor of Glaucoma Studies and Wound Healing at University College London's Institute of Ophthalmology and Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He holds an MB from University of Southampton (1980) and PhD from UCL (1994). As Founder Director of the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre in Ophthalmology, he leads one of the world's top ophthalmology research programs.
His research focuses on pioneering glaucoma treatments through surgical innovation ('Moorfields Safer Surgery System'), anti-scarring therapies, and regenerative approaches using Müller stem cells. He co-developed the '10-10-10' surgical goal (10mmHg pressure lasting 10 years in 10-minute procedures) and co-created OCTane AI algorithms with Google DeepMind. His work spans wound healing mechanisms, microdevice development, and ocular regeneration.
Professor Khaw's recent publications demonstrate strong focus on glaucoma epidemiology, surgical innovation, AI applications in ophthalmology, and molecular mechanisms of ocular diseases. His team consistently publishes high-impact clinical and translational research in top ophthalmology journals.
- Raised over £120 million in research funding
- Founded NIHR specialist Biomedical Research Centre
- Primary fundraiser for Moorfields International Children's Eye Centre
- Led inclusion of eye examinations in UK Biobank (world's largest eye cohort)
He directs the Ocular Healing and Regeneration Laboratory investigating fibroblast modulation, stem cell differentiation, and anti-fibrotic biotherapeutics. His multidisciplinary team collaborates extensively with engineers, data scientists, and biologists.
